What an excellent show! Here is it 2019 and I am just starting in on the first season. I've watched ten episodes in this first week alone and I was already hooked from the first episode.
This is one of those shows that believe in the power of telling a story... a good story. There are no gimmicks, melodrama or soap opera-like cheesy plot twists, just good old fashioned well-paced story telling. The story is rich with a myriad of things that everyone can relate to regardless or ethnicity or social class. The actors seem as if they aren't acting, the script seems like improv as if they were told what the character should feel and the end game of the episode and then given the chance to ad lib, that is how effortless and natural the acting comes across.
Thank goodness that Oprah Winfrey started her own network to show the world that simple, everyday stories can be told by a majority non-white cast. Not to say that there weren't shows before this, but I'm referring to an entire network that isn't BET where the portrayal of black people is filled with stereotypes of gang bangers and criminals with no other purpose of the character than to be a negative stereotype without any other redeeming purpose or backstory. This entire cast could have been Caucasian and the story would not have to have been changed at all, that is how well-written this show is and that is why everyone can relate to the characters or their circumstances.
UPDATE: I just started season 2 and the comment I made about there being no melodrama and soap-opera-like twist has officially changed. I hope the show doesn't stray too far from the formula that they used in the first season.
Only in the UK can a show disappear for six years and reappear yet not be called a reboot. Fortunately, this show, like the many other British shows that take two, three or four years off between seasons is well worth the wait. The show is rather realistic in that not a single one of the actors seem as though they are speaking from a script or acting and it is almost as if this is a documentary about the things that can go wrong when you have latch-key kids growing up with little parent supervision.
In my opinion, this show is the least funny of the three "ish" shows but YMMV. This show has more "let's educate the viewing public on history" moments than Black-ish, and while those moments are informative, most are not done with the same humour and tend to be more informative than funny.
It's a good show to pass the time, but unfortunately, it is not must see TV.
Great production value, excellent cast, intriguing plot yet something was missing for me that I can't quite understand... was it the lead actress? Who knows. t certainly is a good show but lacking in something.
This is a good show with a solid cast of actors but I'm hard pressed to find a single likable character.
I'm late to this party but I'm so happy that I am here. I've had this on my watchlist for a while and I have just finished the two seasons in one week because it was so great. This show is an unpredictable thrilling, dramatic dark comedy with so much suspense and comedy packed into a half hour. I was thoroughly impressed to find that Bill Hader not only stars in this, but he created it, writes, directs and produces it as well. There are several other talented writers and directors and a couple of episodes were so different that I had to check the credits to see (and follow) the work of some of the other directors. The series starts mostly with humour and as each season progresses we see more of the drama and suspense interwoven. I highly recommend this show.
As a huge fan of TV genres that fall within the escapist realm, for me to watch shows that deal with current events, the show has to be pretty damn good and deal with those current events in a thought provoking way. This show was no different than opening up a newspaper and reading about current events with Matt Lauer, etc., etc., etc., there was literally nothing interesting added to make it any different than what we know about the real world events versus this fictional show. The top billing star thing and female empowerment doesn't work for me when a show is this bland.
It is very difficult to give this show an overall rating because each season is self contained with a new plot and new characters. For me, the first season was a 5/5, it was perfection in terms of horror, suspense, twists, and the conclusion. Every season after that paled in comparison. For me the second highest rating for any season other than the first would be 4/5 and the lowest would be a 2/5, hence my overall review.
The advertising for this show is wonderful, so much so that I thought I might really like it. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It's not a bad show, I just don't think it is a very good show. I can see that they have a few common themes and like some comedy shows that satire real life and attempt to have the viewer draw parallels, this show takes that approach in a fairly weak and unfunny way.
Along those lines, and please excuse me for using South Park as a reference in an intelligent discussion, but South Park manages to draw real life parallels in ridiculously crass yet hilarious ways. This season alone South Park has covered immigration, separation of children from parents by ICE, the impact of cannabis legalization and the impact of having China as a major trade partner. Those are fairly serious topics yet the humour was so absurd that I couldn't help but laugh at those South Park episodes.
This show is connecting the dots but what is missing is the laughter. Every joke just seems to fall flat. And by "connecting the dots" I mean the ways people interact without being their true selves... that is the running theme so far but where's the punchline? I'm three episodes in and only because I did manage to laugh twice briefly during the second episode will I give it a few more episodes to see if that was just a fluke. I got zero laughs while watching the first and third episode so I'm not sure how much more I can watch.
Most of my rating is for the uniqueness of the show and the images of cakes between the segments, my goodness do I want some vanilla cake with buttercream frosting! :)
I'm a bit late to this part given that I've started watching one year after this show went off the air. I was sick and found myself with too much time to watch TV so I started with the three movies before watching this show. So far, everything is pretty sub-par and I'm three movies and two episodes in so far.
This seems like the kind of show that you have playing in the background while you complete all of your chores and multi-tasking, or for when there is absolutely nothing else on because you're sick in bed and you've already watched all the other good shows. It's a cute premise and it is a nice, lighthearted show with an unfortunately low budget that is very obvious, so I really can't recommend it unless you fit into those scenarios above.
