I watch every, and I mean every superhero show. Even if it is mediocre (like this was in season 1) I still hang on for dear life hoping it will get better and fortunately, this did get much better in season 2. Now here I am in the first episode of season 3 and I found myself wondering if they have gone back to mediocrity. Fingers crossed.
I remember watching this for the first time as a twenty year old thinking "Black people in normal roles where they aren't gangsters and thieves? Just normal people with regular drama and laughs like any other show???!!!?!? Sign me up!" Sure there was the Jeffersons and Good Times, but this was the first show to appeal to my generation at the time with young black women and I didn't realize how nice it was to have that representation until the show aired.
Five seasons and syndication is a success for the 90s. And if you look at the episode count, some seasons had 27 episodes, unheard of, even then, as the norm was 22 to 24. You can't tell me that if they replaced the entire cast with Caucasian people that this wouldn't have been "Friends" because the friendships and laughter were the same, I watched both shows. The major difference is that the cast of friends was able to get more viewers and as a result negotiate the largest salaries per episode (at the time) for any actors on a comedy series. Shame.
Big show with big names and quality writing... my only problem with it is that I found most of the characters unlikable which made for a difficult watch. I believe it was more so the actors' own spin on their characters that I disliked rather than the way the characters were written. If an all new cast were put into those roles I'm sure the new actors would have a different take, from facial expressions to the tone of the delivery of lines which may have resulted in me loving the show. But we'll never know.
I also found aspects of the plot to be unbelievable... I shouldn't have to suspend my disbelief when watching a show about a woman with cancer but so many things were just too over the top to be considered remotely possible for someone in her situation.
This is most certainly the most unique show in ages and the fact that it is based on a comic makes me want to read the comic. I highly recommend this... the characters are interesting to say the least, perfect casting with great actors and the most ridiculous (in a good way) unpredictable plot.
I enjoyed this show and wish it had another season. I get it, the plot doesn't really lend itself to several seasons, but I wish that it had wrapped up more neatly. Netflix needs to stop axing shows before giving them a proper sendoff.
I love Amy Poehler and I love Chris Pratt... so why is it so hard for me to get through a half hour episode of this show without falling asleep? This show is just not funny to me at all. It has been on my watch list since I created my watchlist. I tried to watch it when it was on Netflix and only made it through the first episode.
Now, several years later, here I am in 2019 watching it on Prime and I've only made a dent in season two (thank God season one only had six episodes) . The cast is filled with talent and comedians, yet I haven't laughed. How did this make it seven seasons? Where is the turning point where it becomes funny? I recall not liking Breaking Bad until the third episode and then that show became the reason I looked forward to Sunday night, but I've watched a full ten episodes of this and no spark... I can't recommend it as a comedy if it doesn't make me laugh, but if you are a fan of the actors and want to see them, well here you go.
EDIT: My first laugh came finally happened with Season 2 Episode 7 and it was because of Meghan Mullally's character's GUEST role. She was hilarious and I thought it was a fluke but watched the next episode and it was funny, then watched the next and I laughed again. I've increased by half a star and will increase if it continues but my goodness, 13 episodes just to get to a laugh? Shame... so if you're watching this as a newbie wondering how it was rated so highly, just know that the humour gets better mid-season 2.
This popped up as a show that I rated highly but never reviewed... I don't know why I didn't review it, it was near perfection. I recall both seasons being suspenseful and unpredictable, with the first season being 5/5 and the second being 4.5/5.
This show, because of the violence in one particular episode, became quite controversial. Violence in film and TV are just like sex and swearing, there are always going to be people who dislike it for that one thing and people who can see past those things IF the violence (or sex or swearing) are integral to the plot or woven into the plot in such a way that seems natural. However, when those three controversial topics are put in TV and film in a way that seems to only be there for shock value or to create buzz, then it is off-putting and the producers deserve every complaint they get. In this show's case, the violence in that particular episode was filmed before something like it happened in real life and they decided to air the episode anyway, it wasn't like they could predict the future yet people were still up in arms and I believe that really hurt the ratings.
I hear they are now (2019) planning a U.S. remake and I am certain they will f%^& that up royally because so many of the funniest bits have no crossover and will need to be changed, and the U.S. has violence everyday, so how will that scene go over there when it was a real life event in the States that caused the original uproar? I digress, this show is amazing and I recommend it highly.
I'm not big on competition shows or reality TV but I really do enjoy this show because I love music and it is fun trying to determine who the singer could possibly be... sometimes you simply know because the voice is too iconic to hide, even with a mask, and other times it really is difficult.
I only decided to watch this after discovering Phoebe Waller-Bridge's talent in Fleabag. I thought it would be nice to see what she was working on simultaneously to the first season of Fleabag because in an interview she mentioned coming up with jokes and being torn which show to use the joke in... so at least knew this would be funny despite being entirely different.
Of all the soaps, this is the most absurd... well, I suppose that now cancelled one from way back when, Passions, was the most absurd, but B&B takes the cake when it comes to quick turn arounds, bed hopping and nearly incestuous relationships.
