Excuse my French, but this show is a broke-ass True Blood and Charlaine Harris must be running out of ideas for her books. I say this as a huge fan of True Blood. Clearly HBO had a larger budget to support that show, while NBC spent a quarter of that budget to make this show. I want to like this, and I'll give it 3 episodes to see if it changes my mind since sometimes pilots are made on a meager budget, but so far the pilot is weak in terms of the actors, the budget, the writing and direction.
UPDATE 2018: I've left my original review below. This show makes a great first impression, but by the second season it starts to exhaust you with the same formula in every episode. Every. Single. Episode. Is. The. Same. I have dropped from 3.5 to 3 stars. The acting is fairly mediocre as I don't believe Alice Braga has the acting chops to play a crime boss as lead actress in this show... her rise from the first season doesn't fit her character. And a sore spot for me is that Hemky Madera's fake Mexican accent is almost offensive, why he's chosen that accent is beyond me.
ORIG REVIEW: OMG! I just found this show last week and after reading some of the reviews I decided to give it a try. The story is great, so I can only imagine how good the book is, the acting is good, but it really would be better if some of the actors were more seasoned and of course if they spoke in their native language... but then again, if they spoke in Spanish here would be no point because the Spanish version already exist, so while I'm glad they didn't white-wash the cast, it does seem unusual that the parts shot in Mexico with Mexican characters is in English.
That aside, it's a great show and the story doesn't seem to have been done in this way before. I do wish it were on a stronger network because there's that fear of cancellation, but so far, so good. I watched 14 episodes in one week and am now caught up to the current season two.
I watched the pilot last year and was unimpressed overall, but Kevin Bacon definitely made it watchable. In trying to get into the episodes, despite the 30 minute run time, I can barely get through this hot mess. I'm not sure who their target market it, but it isn't my demographic.
This is definitely one of those shows that you watch hoping that each episode will get better, but unfortunately never does. I'm on episode 3 and ready give up.
After watching for two seasons and learning of the series cancellation yesterday, I am reminded that I never reviewed this...as usual there are no spoilers in my review, because I NEVER put spoilers in my review since this website is also used for people to track old shows they've never seen.
The first season really required too much suspension of disbelief, but it was entertaining nevertheless. The second season, unfortunately too late in the season, is where the show started to find its footing and show that it had ways to adapt the story line (which seemed boxed in) in order to last a couple more seasons at least. It's good, but there are much better shows out there to invest your valuable time in. Not to flip-flop, the final episode was the best one yet, with many unexpected twists and turns, some wrap up and some bit of story line left open for what would have been the next season but we're left to use our imagination, so it is not a bad investment of time.
This was a cute little teenage drama that I found was out of my age group. Don't get me wrong, I still watch shows that are marketed towards 20 somethings, but this was just too basic
This show gets such a high rating from me based on nostalgia rather than great acting quality or story line. The first seasons were better when the original sisters were present, but it was still watchable to the end.
The child actress steals the show. Unfortunately, she is a better actor than the male lead, which makes it difficult to power through his scenes given that he's the lead. It was unfortunate that this was cancelled because the story had a lot of potential.
I wish I could say this was great... it wasn't. It wanted to be "Scream" (the movie, not the show) but instead it was a light whimper due to mediocre acting and a weak, predictable plot with obvious twists thrown in. It's not a bad show to stream if you are caught up on every better show that is out there because it does not end with a crazy cliffhanger that leaves you wondering what is next despite it being cancelled well after the finale.
I've been watching since the first season, and while I wasn't hooked on the plot, the acting was so compelling that I continued watching. I can't tell you how happy I am that I did, because I can assure you that if you like it now (or kinda like it) season 3 is awesome. The seasons are standard short seasons as for most UK shows, and with such good acting, you won't be suffering to get to season 3.
Two episodes in and I can't decide whether to ditch and run so I'm going to watch another episode. Is the acting good? Meh, the acting isn't bad, and these days, sadly "not bad" is the new good. Is it interesting? Yes, the idea is interesting, but I'm not sure if it is being executed well. But because I like sci-fi and really enjoyed Inception, which also involved dream connectivity, I'm hoping the third episode will be good enough hook me.
