I'm only on episode 3, so far so good... just one pet peeve, I hate it when shows are classified as comedies when the show is really an indie genre of a DEPRESSING dysfunctional family. It's interesting enough to watch, but it's not a comedy.
Compare this to other dysfunctional family show that aren't filled with depressed characters going through a tough time that put the "fun" in dysFUNction like Modern Family, and it shows how life's everyday events can be funny without the depressing component that this show adds.
Well this was interesting, wasn't it? There's nothing quite like this plot, but unfortunately it isn't entirely compelling and if you are a busy lover of good TV, this show can slip off of your radar. It is good, just not compelling.
After watching the pilot i was on the fence. I thought it was over the top, but there was enough there to get me to watch the next episode, and the next, and so on, until I was 100% on board the crazy/soapy/black version of 80s nighttime soaps like Dynasty and Falcon Crest. Now fast forward to season 2 and it has lost some of its magic. Why? Because I think the first episode of season 2 was simply them cramming every possible plot device into 42 minutes of airtime sans commercials. While it hasn't been as good as season 1, it is still entertaining and the same way my family sat around to watch Dallas, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest, they now sit around and watch Empire because it is this over the top soapy drama with a bit of "Oh my goodness, did they really just say that?" comedy thrown in. My only wish: stop the auto tune.
This was a good show, but it was very inconsistent. Some episodes were great, some were AMAZING! but unfortunately about half were mediocre/watch out of habit episodes. Notice that they made it to 100 episodes so that they can be syndicated and then hard stopped at 100. Towards the end they were just dragging out the story line to make it to that magic 100 for syndication. As a bit of a nit-pick, I found Anna Torv to be the weakest link. She showever very little emotion on her face other than scared or skeptical while the other actors were able to portray other emotions like happiness, sadness, curiosity, sex appeal, shock, etc., she just had the two looks.
This is Netflix's weakest link. I binge watched the first two seasons during the Christmas holiday when nothing was on and I thought it was mediocre because the acting was weak, except for Famke, and the story seemed to go nowhere. Now here comes season three competing against what is arguably the best fall season ever (i.e. many good shows returning and many new shows actually seeming good) and there's just no way i have the time to wast on another ten episodes. Who knows, I may opt to finish this during 2015 Christmas, but there are so many other shows, old shows that are in my queue that I highly doubt I'll finish. I don't recommend this show unless you have absolutely nothing else to watch and nothing else to do.
I watched the pilot, but I just didn't laugh at all. I can't even muster up the time to give it a second chance, but my gut tells me it would be a waste of another half hour.
I'm still on the fence after watching the entire first season. I can't recall this type of story being told on TV before, and it has occasional laughs. I think the thing that keeps me from really enjoying this show is the character Carol, I can't stand her.
It's a cute, quirky. silly little half hour comedy with a couple of laughs per episode. Nothing to complain about, worth the time it you have it.
I really wanted to love this show, but I just didn't.
It is sadly very forgettable. I actually watched it last year and just now thought to myself "Oh, I never got a chance to finish this one" and I clicked it and after seeing all the "watched" boxes checked I still couldn't remember watching it. I had to read the summary recaps and then I finally remembered watching. I have a good memory, this show just was not memorable. Very good acting though.
I loved this show for its silliness and heart. Cancelled too soon!
