The Tracey Ullman Show

I used to watch this when I was in my teens and I was just reminded of it because there is now "Tracey Ullman's Show" airing in 2016. I was just about to track it and it is not here unfortunately so I thought I'd rate this oldie but goodie. I'm not usually a fan of British humour, but Tracey was funny then and she's still funny now. Good clean fun compared to some of the ridiculously raunchy comedies that I've watched in more recent year, that I no doubt have also grown to love.

This is one of those absurd comedies done right. The plot always involves something utterly ridiculous but I find the part that makes me laugh instantly is the episode title card. Try not reading the episode title or description here on Sidereel or in the TV Guide and instead watch the opener cold... that's guaranteed to be your first laugh of the episode 7 out of 10 times.
UPDATE 2019: As the seasons have progressed, the writing has weakened somewhat but it is still worth the watch. It is like an even more crass South Park but without animation and without the witty social commentary.

Who is the demo for this show? I can't even guess. What is the accurate genre? It says "comedy" but that can't be right. It's like scripted reality TV and is so blah that it wouldn't even qualify as drama. How has it lasted this long?

I'm not usually a fan of unscripted TV shows nor am I interested in the personal side of celebrities, but this show is the perfect exception. Some episodes are "blah" but other episodes are hilarious and show a whole new range of talent that some of these celebrities have. If you haven't watched yet and are curious about whether it is worth your time, just Google some of the greater performances like Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taraji P. Henson, Jenna Dewan Tatum and Channing Tatum.
Aside from the odd mediocre performance (which the exceptional performances make up for) the only reason I can't rate this a 4 is Chrissy Teigen, she adds zero value to the show as the "colorful commentator".

January 2016 and I'm just starting the first season of this show because many people have recommended it. So, it seems good, but I'm wondering how so many people ranked it so highly and I'm waiting for that "ah ha" moment where I begin to see that they see. Like Breaking Bad for example, it was awesome for me at episode 3. I'm at episode 5 so far with Banshee and still waiting. I'll update this if it improves. UPDATE: Wow, for me this show didn't get to the point where I really wanted to find out what happened next until episode 7. Episodes 8, 9, and 10 were also very good. This show was a really slow build for me, Season 2 was consistently better, and so far Season 3 Episode 3 is the best episode of the series that I've seen so far... !'m almost caught up!

Another hidden gem from Adult Swim that I just found out about. This was outrageously absurd and that is part of this show's charm. I am going to enjoy catching up on these two seasons. I've been looking for a replacement for the raunchiness that was Drawn Together and so far this looks equally as ridiculous albeit slightly less funny.

How did I not know that this show existed?!!? I am not sure if Mike knows that they are really making fun of him. This show is funny, but not in the same way as South Park or Family Guy. Instead, this is funny because the "character" of Mike Tyson seems to say things that the real Mike Tyson would say or believe.

The pilot showed such great promise and then it got a bit cheesy. But if you are a fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar, you'll watch it anyway like I did... it was my guilty pleasure and I with it had lived up to its potential.

I LOVED Robin Williams, I grew up with him as Mork! I tried watching this while Robin was alive and I un-tracked it because it just wasn't funny at all (and I also love Sarah Michelle Gellar). After Robin's death I tried to give this another go, but unfortunately this is just not a good comedy. At. all.
Sympathy for his passing and missing his face on my TV screen doesn't equate to me forcing myself to watch this. I'd rather watch some of his funny shows and awesome movies. Not only was he funny, but he was scary and dark as hell in that movie "One Hour Photo", I had no idea he could pull off such a scary character. And he was beyond awesome in Good Will Hunting. And don't get me started about Mork and Mindy because I never missed an episode as a kid. You are missed Robin!

This show had so much promise! I loved the first season and after that it took such an unexpected and disappointing turn that my rating of the went from a 9/10 (on IMDB) to 7/10. I do think that they could have turned things around if given the chance by the network. Someday if I have time I'll re-watch it and maybe I can appreciate the latter seasons more.
