This show is absolutely wonderful! There is a bit of every genre, from comedy and drama to sci-fi and thriller. The bite-sized 20 minute episodes go by far to fast and certainly have me waiting for the next season to drop because seven episodes were just not enough. A unique story is so rare and the plot certainly is unique despite having elements that are familiar when it comes to every superhero or villain needing a well crafted origin story.
I recalled the star of this show from the horror movie IT because she was such a good young actor. She's well deserving of a staring role in this series and the supporting cast is also equally as talented. I highly recommend this series, it has something for everyone
It used to be, back when Netflix streaming services were fairly new, that a show with "Netflix Original Series" on it meant that the show was going to be pretty f-ing awesome. Now Netflix will slap their "Original Series" logo on anything, from low budget shows they make to shows they had nothing to do with other than negotiating licensing rights for streaming the show after a series finishes. In between all of that there are less and less shows that depict the original quality that we were once used to with a Netflix Original Series. This show epitomizes that fact.
This is one of those shows that are so bad that you begin to wonder if they are doing it intentionally, like Sharknado. But they weren't. So you keep watching because Netflix has that new feature where the next episode autoplays and for some reason we allow it, like sheep. There's also the curiosity of whether they may be able to pull a rabbit out of their ass and make the plot suddenly twist into something smart because you think to yourself "Netflix has taken a downturn over the years, but would they really invest in pure shyte?" Well, as this show reveals, the answer is yes.
I missed watching a lot of TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s because I was in university at the time and then after graduation I was working about 60 hours per week, so I try to go back and check out some of the old shows I missed to see what everyone was talking about back then. This was a good show but it certainly wasn't so good that it would have been worth missing quality sleep over.
While I enjoyed it, I can also see the many reasons why it was eventually cancelled. The better episodes are towards the end of the season, especially the one with Lee Majors in it, because if you're my age you'll appreciate the symmetry of his guest arc.
This is a nice little comedy show worth a few good laughs. It's not spectacular but it is a good show.
UPDATE: That review was for season 1. Unfortunately, season 2 is a dumpster fire. Obviously that is my opinion so your mileage may vary.
This isn't "From M. Night Shyamalan" per se because he didn't create it or write it, though he did direct two episodes so Apple TV has put his name front and center hoping to draw out those who are fans of his much, much earlier work that is much better than his more recent work.
The episodes are only a half hour long and there are far too many pregnant pauses for suspense that it ends up eating up the half hour and having the effect of being annoying rather than suspenseful. This is the fault of the other directors as the first episode that was directed by Shyamalan didn't suffer from this and was fairly captivating.
I like a GOOD story with a slow burn but this seems to be a mediocre story with a turtle-like burn.
I don't fit the main target audience for this show, though I have been known to watch shows that are outside of my age demo and still be able to relate to the characters, this YA show is a stretch. Do any teenagers do even a fraction of the things these characters do: Own and operate a speakeasy? Join an underground fight club. Drive across the country in a hearse to claim your father's body?
I'm sure I would have loved this show if it were anything like the comic because I used to actually read Archie comics when I was a kid. There's an episode of family guy in the 18th season spoofing the "dark and edgy" versions of young adult shows that have been remade (Sabrina, Riverdale, etc.) and that Family Guy episode is spot on.
Each season seems to loose touch with reality yet this show is not in the fantasy genre. That said, I have Netflix and sometimes when I'm cleaning my house this plays in he background... I'd recommend it for background noise. I originally tuned in for the older cast members, especially Like Perry, but I don't know if I'll continue to watch... though I am mesmerized as how much the young woman who portrays Betty looks like Brittany Murphy.

This show was okay but not great. There are absolutely no strong actors on this show, including Renee Zellweger. It's as if her acting get's worse as she ages, which is very odd.
I'm guessing this show won't be back since the lead male character is portrayed by Blake Jenner. For those who may not know, his ex-wife (Melissa Benoist, Supergirl) recently stated that she was a victim of domestic abuse and although she didn't name him by name, he is logically the only person who could have abused her. There are several interviews she's given in the past about her being "accident prone" and having various bruises and cuts, now she's come clean to say that she was covering for her "previous partner" because she loved him and thought he'd stop if she stuck by him. Given that he's disabled comments on his social media pages, it's him, and I can't imagine this show being renewed because (A) it wasn't that good, and (B) who wants to work with serial abuser? He needs to go into anger management and rehab.
I really enjoyed the original series. Now it's back in 2019 and I'm a bit on the fence so far. The first episode seemed to have content more geared toward shock content than welcoming old fans of the show. The second episode seems as if they are going back to their old format, slowly but surely... at least I hope. I'll update my rating later if it warrants, but right now after two episodes of the new season it is only 3/5 stars for me for the new 2019 series (L Word: Generation Q) which is below the 4/5 I had rated the original.)
I really wanted to like this show but I'm betting this will be the first real cancellation on the DC streaming service (the first cancellation was due to filming location issues). This show just doesn't seem sustainable. I have no idea who the adults in the target market for this show are but I'm not in it.
Here it is December 2019 and I've come across this show some 17 years after the first episode. I was watching the new show, Batwoman, and it has been clear that the standout in that show i the character Alice. So of course I Google to see who this wonderful actress is so that I can see if there is anything in her body of work that I might want to watch. Then the shocker.... This show exists. Looking back at the time period, I can see that I missed hearing about this show because I was travelling in Europe and when I went back to work I was swamped for several months. Back then I really only watched a couple shows because I had a much more active social life given that I was 29.
Now I'm all pumped to watch this show when I realize that I have seen this actress before when she was in Lost Girl, a Canadian show in which she played a character named Tamsin. I hated that character mostly because I thought the actress playing her could not act and her scenes were painful to watch because she only had one facial expression, confused. Even when the character was supposed to be happy she looked confused... even her sad face looked confused. Like she wanted to ask a question but was hesitant in the midst of her happiness or sadness... and don't get me started on how she looked when she was actually supposed to be confused... that was way over the top.
The irony is not lost on me that she is what brought me to this show because her acting is so great in Batwoman. This just goes to show that some actors can continue to get work, year after year, because the fit the "look" of the role despite having zero talent. One could argue that she was young but some on, there are tons of child actors much younger than she was who knock it out of the park in their roles. She was a horrible actress, given role after role, and now she has finally, finally, after more than two freaking decades, grown into a good actress. She is positively wonderful as Alice in Batwoman, but she is like nails on a chalkboard as Dinah Lance in Birds of Prey.
I will still continue watching just because it is a decent show, not amazing, but not horrible and it is a good show to watch before the Birds of Prey movie comes out next year... not that this show is required to understand the movie, but it is nice complementary viewing, and I haven't watched anything with Shemar Moore in it since his soap opera days, nice eye candy.
