I'm one of those people who loved comics as a kid and love superhero movies and shows, so I'm not sure this is the most unbiased opinion. Basically, for me not to like a superhero show or movie it has to suck pretty hard...and Gotham does NOT suck hard...
It's what you'd expect from a Batman-esque show... the gritty city, tough cops, crazy, crazy over-the-top psycho criminals. As a TV show, it is very much "crime of the week" but unlike serialized shows the crime doesn't necessarily wrap up by the end of the episode and there are several ongoing plots. I think its definitely a good way to spend an hour. The unique thing about this show is that we've never delved into Bruce Wayne's life as a child beyond the odd movie flashback to the usual scene of his parent's death, so this is kinda nice to see how Bruce grew into Batman.
I absolutely LOVE this show and its social commentary! The showrunner said that the "black mirror" is the reflection we see when we look into our smart phones, TVS and laptops when we turn them off. Each episode is a distinct and twisted take on the things that need changing in the world today because technology has changed the way we live in great ways but also with dire consequences. They manage to do this in a non-preachy way that drives home the point for those who may not have even noticed the issue before watching the episode.
When this show was cancelled I was sad but kept tracking on with hopes of a reboot...RDJ bought the rights to one episode and apparently is planning a movie... then there was a Christmas special in Dec. 2014 and now Netflix has picked up the show for 12 episodes!!! Can't wait. If you haven't watched this yet, you're in for a treat.
I LOVED the movie, so I really wanted this show to do well. The writing is good, the actors did a good job (not great) in the pilot. But... I think the casting department just tried to find someone who looked like Bradley Cooper, found the lead and said "This will work." I think their lead is the weakest link. there's no need to have him look like the star of the movie if the star of the movie is going to have an occasional cameo. I'll give it three episodes and hope my mind is changed.
Crass and vile humour! Which is why I absolutely love this show.
I can't say that I agree with every point or social commentary they make in the episodes, but I can say that 9 times out of 10 I'm laughing.
This is the most visually disturbing show out there. Seasons 1 & 2 were good, but I find season 3 to be quite lacking and even more focused on grossing out the viewer. It's well acted, but not a single likeable character on the show.
It is a "good" show. There seem to be two camps, those who think it is "AMAZING!" and those who think it is an "abomination" because of the gay and transgender characters. I think both of those camps are wrong. The show isn't awful, nor is it amazing. I was disappointed because the promos looked SOOOO good, but then again, this is from the same people who made Matrix 2 & 3 and the recent film Jupiter Ascending, so I can't say I'm surprised this wasn't a home run.
All that being said, I'm willing to watch the whole season, not in one day because it isn't THAT good, but it is interesting and well made despite there being no actors that wowed me with their performance. I'm on Ep 6., so far I'd say it is a 3/5... will update if it gets any better by the finale.
UPDATE: Okay, it is pretty amazing. By the end of season 1 I was hooked. However by the time season 2 came out I'd forgotten everything and I didn't think it was worth watching a second time. Well, I got sick and streamed season 1 and it was better the second time around. I saw the depth and that is really what made me upgrade it from a 3 to a 4. It would be a 5 if just a couple of the actors were better actors, but fortunately good writing and direction saved those who were the weakest links. Season 2 was seamlessly woven into the first season, with the only incongruity being the last episode/movie finale, which was a bit out of sync but still good. Overall, I highly recommend it.
I watched season 1. I was just about to start season 2 and I thought to myself, I just don't like it enough to give up an hour of my already busy life to watch it... it's well acted, but I find that I don't care about the characters due to the weak character development and the plot is lacking. I've untracked this.
Edie Falco is such a great actress that she is able to make me despise her character Jackie... Jackie clearly has narcissistic personality disorder as she is selfish (even when she does something nice, there is always some benefit to her), destructive, and it only gets worse when she is using drugs.
The character is written in such a way that it's no longer fun watching the show, I'm surprised it has lasted 7 seasons and I look forward to the wrap of the series this season because there are no redeeming qualities in this character. I am curious with how they will end it...certainly not with a happy ending.
Tatiana certainly shows her acting chops in this show... Each character she plays seems as if it is really being played by a different actress! I've found the plot to be very interesting and each season continues to be better than the last.
I loved the first season! I loved the second season just a little bit less than the first season. I loved the third season just slightly less than the second season... you see where I'm going with this... There were 8 seasons, so by the time it ended my "love" was down to a "like" with a side of "meh". Worth the watch for sure, but be prepared to have your love of this show tested by season 5.
