I loved this when i was a kid... and by "kid" I mean a teenager who was too old to be watching cartoons.
Meh...it's a show about adultery and the impact it has on the spouse, kids and even the extended family. The very nature of the show means that you won't really like the characters, even if your a fan of the actors. All of the characters are very unlikeable, the acting is above average but not "wow" worthy.
Good enough to watch during the summer when nothing else is on but it's not worth cramming into your schedule in the fall season or if you're just a busy person.
Really great acting on this show... such that I can't watch it right before bed because Norman is creepy as hell!
The only thing this show needs is a new network... A&E is too small for this show and it needs better marketing. Other than that, it's perfect and I highly recommend it.
What can I say that hasn't been said already? This was one of THE best shows on television EVER.
I didn't watch this during the original airing and am on Season 6 now. This is one of the rare comedies that actually succeed in making me laugh out loud, and when I'm not laughing I'm smiling.
Well written & acted & stupid funny... which is great.
I REALLY wanted to like this show, after all, it has a lot going for it... a fairly solid cast, a healthy production budget, and a captivating pilot episode. So what's the problem for me? The premise.
If you've never heard of the Jejune Institute in real life then DON'T google it because you'll ruin the plot of this show for yourself and what seems like a fairly awesome show with potential sci-fi elements will suddenly become nonsense. This show's origins are based on nonsense. Sure, everyone who participated in the Jejune Institute in real life said it was the experience of a lifetime but if you have a fairly active life and already are self aware and see the good in the world despite the bad then you'd classify the Jejune Institute as nonsense. People who had too much time an money on their hands to create a game for people who had too much time on their hands to play. Knowing the origins of the show ruins the adventurous element of the show. If I didn't already know the origins, I might be quite mesmerized and I'd certainly keep watching.
The quality of this show is impressive. It has that feeling of a series that could last several years because every main character (and even some of the supporting characters) are so multifaceted that there are so many layers and layers of the character to peel back.
So far the character development has been great and I'm we're only four episodes in. I wasn't expecting to be so drawn in to this show given that I waw never a fan of gangster shows (the Sopranos is still on my watchlist, yes I know it's excellent, but it's not my favourite genre). There are so many seasoned excellent actors on this show that I suppose it was inevitable that I'd love it, Giancarlo Esposito is one of my favourites since Breaking Bad (and I find it a hilarious coincidence that he's of both Italian and African American descent given that mafia rivals in the show hating each other for several reasons, including their ethnicity). And of course Forest Whitaker and Vincent D'Onofrio are excellent actors and the main characters in the series.
This show is definitely worth your time, even if like me, crime and mafia stories aren't your typical genre of preference.
The premise of this show is familiar as it touches on real life stories of fertility doctors who have a done this disgusting act... I believe at least four have been caught, one in Canada, two in the States and another somewhere in Europe. While it makes for an interesting read in the newspaper and one might Google months later to see how the courts resolved the cases, unfortunately it makes for a very boring TV show.
The actors are all decent but there are no stand outs or Emmy winners here for acting, writing or directing. Three episodes in and I don't care about any of the characters and that is really something that is necessary for a show to survive, especially when the plot is so predictable. This would be a good summer show when nothing else good is on but it surely isn't a good fit for an autumn evening when there are plenty of other shows to watch that are significantly higher quality than this one. It gets a "meh" rating from me.
The first episode was good but not great. It was just enough to make you want to give it another shot and hope that some things would have been cleaned up from the time they created the pilot, shopped the show around, found a network and then began filming the second episode. But no, the general sense of lacking that was in the pilot has continued on, and while the second episode was enough to carry on to the third, the third episode seems to be the start of a downward trend. I don't believe a single actor in this show is strong enough to carry the show, let alone make their role believable. That's unfortunate because it is an interesting plot that would likely have done well with an entirely new cast and better direction.
Everyone seems so impressed by this show but I am not. However, I am impressed by the set design, costumes and CGI, all of which get a 5/5; the story is not that original of course because it is simply a retelling of actual real life history in a fantasy context... discrimination against those who look different and have different beliefs is basically what nearly every country has in common in their history and unfortunately some still do the same today.
So once we get around the fact that the plot isn't particularly unique, we then realize that the rest is set dressing and a very elaborate and beautiful fantasy world that has been created. If you've seen Roots, simply imagine the slaves as Faeries and change the setting from the plantation to Turinoc and we suddenly have Carnival Row.
Is the acting Emmy worthy? No. I have not a single complaint, the actors were all solid, but nothing here should win any awards.
Is the plot suspenseful/unpredictable? Nope.
Everyone seems to be enamored with the packaging of the show rather than the content of the show itself. If we remove the set dressing, and give the characters regular names and appearance, the review wouldn't be so highly rated because although the acting is good, it is not a very compelling show overall. Don't let the creation of a new world fool you into thinking that this isn't horribly predictable or make you assume there's excellent writing going on here... there isn't. I love the fantasy genre, but this show was weak... beautiful, but weak. I wanted to fall in love with it but I simply like it.
