The Passage

Well that went well! What a great new show. Excellent plot, I was fixated from start to finish of the first two episodes. Great production value, acting, and direction. I'm a total nerd when it comes to shows in this genre, I hope my rating stands the test of time and I won't need to downgrade it from 4.5 later.

I have never read the books this is based on, but if you watched the trailer on Youtube you can read the many comments by those who read the books complaining about how this series is not faithful to the books.

Who in this day and age doesn't understand that when it comes to TV shows and movies, they always take liberties and deviate from the source material? What is there to complain about if both are good? Now I'd like to read the books! Given Fox's abysmal renewal of shows like this, I hope it has great ratings and gets to at least finish with a good conclusion many, many seasons from now.

I just remembered hearing about this show and I thought I'd give it a try as I remember seeing the first episode. When I looked at my tracker I noticed that I marked every episode as watched. I did a double take and looked at the final episode summary and remembered I did watch it. Suffice it to say, this is a very forgettable show and you aren't missing anything if you decide to skip it.

How did this one slip by me unnoticed?!? This is proof that television writers are becoming more and more creative and that they can pull in some big names (Dean Morris) on minor networks with the right material. Not to single out Dean, because the entire cast pulls their weight, not a bad actor in the bunch, even the former model/girlfriend of Chris Brown is believable in this character.

If you strip away the true to life Florida nail salon backdrop, this is money laundering/drugs/good person does a bad thing/ has been done a million times before. But the backdrop is what makes this show so different, as well as the characters. This how is my new guilty pleasure.

The pilot left me with mixed feelings about this show because although there was the good stuff to keep me wanting more (i.e. the acting was solid, cinematography was beautiful, and that shocking scene) there was also the bad stuff (i.e. if you haven't read the book like me, you have no idea what the eff is going on).
So because there were so many good things, given that the trailer didn't give any clarity I decided turn to Google and I read the premise and it makes sense.

Without giving any spoilers, this is a fight between the "new" gods and the "old" mythological gods we've seen in tons of films and movies. Who are the new gods? Well, just think about what society "worships" now: Internet, computers, money/power via stock markets and conspiracy theories... those are, sadly, the new gods, and they want the old gods to hand over their power to them. The flashbacks can be a bit confusing without this information because the flashback allude to times when people believed in and prayed to the old gods.

I'm definitely not keen on shows that do such a poor job of telling the viewer WTF is going on that I have to Google the premise because the trailer gave little clue and the writers assume everyone has heard of or read the book, but it was worth it for this show given that the good stuff far outweighs the bad.... at least so far as of episode 2!

This was one of the strongest pilots for a dramatic comedy in recent years. It contained just enough insight into the characters to hook viewers into watching the next episode. I really like the uniqueness of the plot and can see how this show can keep going for several seasons assuming the ratings continue to be good. Definitely worth investing 42 minutes each week.

Good production value, well acted, etc., etc., but I just couldn't was it after the third despicable act of violence in the pilot. I can watch horror and violence in shows, but I can't watch it in shows and movies that depict real life events. We know slaves were whipped, but I don't see how watching the depiction of that has any entertainment value for me at this stage in my life. I saw Roots back in the day, but this older version of me wouldn't watch it again. My skin is too thin for this type of genre. Same goes for all similar films and shows... i.e. holocaust films, documentaries depicting real life atrocities. I just can't due to the subject matter, despite the quality acting and production.

BEWARE: The opening theme song will make your ears bleed. So far this is very good, but unfortunately I am watching this weekly with the new U.S. show The Family, which is also about an abducted child who has escaped. I found that while watching episode 2 of this show, I've managed to merge bits of the two shows together because there are so many similarities.

Another comedy that I was hoping would be funny, but unfortunately I didn't laugh once during the pilot. I'm more unforgiving with supposed comedies, I don't even know if I can muster up another 21 minutes to watch episode 2 to see if it improves. I think the writing is on the wall considering that NBC reduced it from 13 episodes to 10 before the pilot even aired.

This show is crude, vile, gross humour...but best of all, it's funny :)
Life is hard, watch Family Guy to make all that adult stuff go away for a half hour (minus 8 minutes for commercials!)

Season 2 is awesome so far! I found the first season so underwhelming that Ii didn't bother to review this show last year. But now I'm two episodes into season 2 and it is like a completely different show...in a good way.
So if you are just starting to watch this show and struggling through the first season, just know that there is a payoff in that the show improves significantly in season 2.
