A widow and her two kids move into a New England cottage haunted by the ghost of a sea captain, who is at first resentful of his home's new boarders. Both NBC and ABC carried the series for one year---and then canceled it. But Hope Lange, who played Mrs. Muir, emerged from the experience a winner: She won the Emmy as Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series both seasons. The show was based on the 1947 Rex Harrison-Gene Tierney movie, which was adapted from the R.A. Dick novel.
