THE BOONDOCKS - SEASON THREE
If you love a big, seriously politically incorrect, brilliantly funny show that delivers belly laughs of the "South Park" quantity, then this one's for you.
BREAKING BAD - SEASON FIVE
I must say, I only recently watched Breaking Bad over a period of a two weeks. Breaking Bad is a radical type of television, and also a very strange kind of must-watch: a show that you dread and crave at the same time.
JANE THE VIRGIN - SEASON TWO
The series finds just the right balance, creating a unique place for itself among the current network fare. With its down-to-earth lead character and self-aware, but not self-parodying approach, Jane The Virgin is a breath of fresh air that will hopefully find a strong and loyal fan base.
STAY CLOSE - SEASON ONE
Stay Close is compelling in the way that makes you want to keep going with it, but not in the way that you'd remember it in much detail a few months down the line.
One word: Masterpiece
The new Charmed has set itself up as a feminist and progressive upgrade of the original, in ways both positive and problematic. The writers' room is extremely diverse, with a very clear feminist vision of the show.
Whether you hit puberty in the 90's or not, Charmed is a reboot that's worth giving a try on namesake alone.
SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT (2017) - SEASON ONE
Combining humor, drama, and documentary techniques, Lee has created an energetic film that takes an unflinching look at modern sexuality -- specifically black sexuality.
MANIAC - SEASON ONE
A big, weird, tightly controlled mess of a show. It swings for the bleachers and doesn't always connect--and when it does, it can seem to skip some bases or run them out of order.
ROOTS - SEASON ONE
Throughout, this new Roots is great entertainment, full of action and romance, an engrossing yarn about people who feel very real and relatable. But just as the original “Roots” had a powerful emotional impact on Americans, the new one is likely to do so as well, especially given that questions of race are at the forefront of discussion as much now as ever.
CHEWING GUM - SEASON ONEIt's rude, refreshing and bursting with flavor. E4 has green-lit a unique comedy series from multi-talented actress Michaela Coel, who stars as lead quite perfectly.
