The Booth at the End

The other reviewers are right, two super short seasons and we still can't tell if the man in the booth is good, or evil, or something else entirely. Although you should be careful what you wish for, it's definitely NOT a monkey's paw scenario, because some people have happy endings.

What we know is that if you do what the book says your wish comes true. Sometimes it comes true if you don't do what it says. Sometimes you get what you want, but not how you wanted it. Sometimes the result is better than you could have possibly imagined.

In every case, the wishing and pursuing the wish change the person who wished. Sometimes they change the man who has the book...

A mystery wrapped in an enigma. I wish there had been more, but maybe it's best left where it ended.

Cosmos

I have a lot of the same reaction to this that I did to the original Cosmos. On the plus side - the science is a decent presentation of the current understanding of whichever field is being covered, and the special effects are beautiful. On the minus side - the special effects are a bit distracting, the cartoon sequences are badly done and annoying, and there is something very arrogant about the persona NDT uses - as though he were broadcasting "TRUTH" and fighting "IGNORANCE".

Science is the process, not the results, and our understanding will change from day to day. A little humility, now and then, would go a long way, even when we're pretty sure we've got it right this time...

Still, worth watching.

Interesting concept, but needlessly gory and heavily reliant on 'the Masquerade' trope. Once you're clear on the concept it's still hard to understand the motivations of the antagonists. Still can't decide if it's got enough interesting stuff to sit through the ookie and nonsensical, but there is some interesting stuff there.

Alphas

It had some very good people in it, and there was some real potential there, but I don't feel as though the show ever really hit it's stride, and I wasn't sure if the 'zap-gee' science was really self-consistent.

I was sorry, but not surprised, to see it go.

It's an interesting mash up of ideas, with an annoying level of 'bad to be bad' (no, Yasamoto's motives DON'T make sense, there would be far more rational ways to get his needs met). There's a lot of interesting questions (what is humanity? Is an android human? A human/alien hybrid) which are handled in a very clumsy manner (really? THAT's the way a debate about a soul is handled?)

Intelligence and immortality and experience give Dr. Morgan the skills to be a super sleuth, looking for a solution to the biggest mystery of all - his own existence.

In the first episode it's given a fairly light treatment (for all the acknowledgement of the curse of immortality, it's a fairly upbeat tone). I do keep flashing back to "Forever Knight", "Torchwood" and even occasionally "Highlander", but am interesting to see how this version of the set up plays out.

As other reviewers have said, this was a promising start. It has a lot of tension and drama, without sacrificing too much in terms of realism or believability. It wasn't until episode 3 that the science hit teh stupid. I'm impressed.

It's a very good adaptation of the book. Beautiful settings and costumes, great spfx, just not quite my genre.

Doctor Who

Full disclosure. I cannot pretend to be objective about this one. I've been head over heels about Dr. Who since 1977. Although the new series brings modern aesthetics and sensibility to the show, it's still Who and I still love it.

The Musketeers

It's an interesting adaptation of the book, with most of the characters being fairly true to themselves. The most jarring adaptations seem to be Athos (a noble fellow still, but no real religious leanings, and with a past entanglement with Milady?!) and Clare (who has been buffed up a lot to meet with modern expectations of a heroine). Definitely a romp still.
