The Supervet

Noel is a truly remarkable human being and all round lovely man. He gives his all to help people and their beloved pets pushing himself, and often medical science, to the limits. Noel deserves to an MBE or something, but I doubt he'd miss a day of work to go and collect it! He's a man with an overwhelming amount of commitment to animals, he performs operations well into the early hours, never has a day off and he even sleeps above the vet practise!

Mainly watching for Noel and his commitment to animals, but the rest of the vet practise team are all greatly dedicated individuals too - and all the pets are very cute! The technology and medical know how from Noel and the team is truly astonishing. I too share Noel's hope that one day vets and doctors can work together to solve common human and animal medical problems.

Horrible Histories

Fantastically written and acted comedic show, with super sketches parodying everything from Masterchef to Lady Gaga! It teaches the more horrible aspects of different historical eras with chld friendly gore and glee, being both factual and entertaining without being forced with either. Each episode neatly links different facts, figures and tales from history from a range of eras using sketches, quizes, parodies and drama. I have certianly learn a lot from watching 5 seasons!

A number of excellent British comedians write and perform in the show, and many others make cameo apperances, bringing a wealth of talent to what essential is a children's fact show. I love all the running jokes and sketches, including "Stupid Deaths" "Bob Hale's Weather Report" and of course all the amazing musical numbers performed in each episode, some of these I can still sing all the words to! A perfectly balanced show - I have yet to find anyone who doesn't enjoy it!

The Returned

Outstanding acting, writing and the most breathtaking and beautiful cinematography I have ever seen, The Returned is as close to perfection as it gets. I have never watched a show with such a compelling atmosphere, beautifully built around a haunting sondtrack (thanks Mogwai!). I'd watch it all over again just for the stunning visuals and cinematography; not since Hannibal have I seen such gorgrous shots of scenery effortlessly capturing the drama. The Returned is a very self contained and character driven series built around excellent performances and focusing on key characters and their reactions to people from a valley town suddenly rising from the dead, ie "The Returned".

The show is a spellbinding, dark, supernatural drama, that slowly reveals key plot points, but the pacing never drags. There are only 16 episodes, so it feels like it goes at quite a pace, but it's very gentle and extremely tense (if that makes sense?). Not all questions posed by the characters are answered by the end, but I think this makes the supernatural elements of the show more powerful and the show is brave enough to let some mysterious just be.

The first season focused on 5 characters who had 'returned' and their families reactions, as well as the townspeople's shock, horror and disbelief at such an occurance. Finding out why the characters return is a partial subplot, the show focuses more on what lead to each characters' original deaths and how they all struggle to fit into the land of the living. The second season goes further into can The Returned survive and live side by side with the living, and ultimately, what started off the chain of events in the first place.

I loved all the main characters, especially once we got to see their backstories in flashbacks and learnt exactly how they came to be where they were. However, Julie and Victor were by far my favourites. They had such a special relationship, that definitely made me cry a fair few times. Although Lena and Camille come a close second, their character arcs beautifully merged and their deep sisterly bond was genuine and powerful throughout the show.

There are some great themes explored throughout the show, loneliness, grief, bereavement, finding your place in the world and coping with life changing events were all to be expected in a supernatural zombie drama. However, in the finale it was clear that "be careful what you wish for" and "you can change things if you really want to enough" played a powerful role in the lives of all The Returned. All of our main Returnees managed to change aspects of their life, because they found a reason/purpose and wanted to make changes badly enough. Always pleasing to see a drama where free will is such an important theme!

There are very few complaints I can make about the show, I rather enjoyed the subtitles and lovely French accents - it added another layer to the show, and the acting was so good you barely needed to use the subtitles. Clairvoyant Lucy and Victor with his second sight are central to the supernatural/fantasy elements of the show and although their powers were shown throughout the series, I would have enjoyed a little more detail on exactly who they are/ their relationship with each other.

Though saying that, would the show's central mystery be as successful if everything was revealed? I'm not sure, but what I do know is The Returned has been an absolutely captivating show. So self contained, but not full of itself. it's not just a super tv series, it is a fine piece of supernatural cinema.

Wild Alaska

I never knew Alaska was so varied in different climates, landscapes and animals! A great showcase of such a large, and often unexplored, state.

Somehow the brilliant brain teasers of Countdown, combined with the comedians from 8 out of ten cats combine to make a show that's even better than the sum of its parts! A good portion of each episode is spent introducing each week's comedians and theur accompaniying mascots, which almost always have a hillarious story attached to them. If they actually get around to playing Coutdown, then the words and numbers challenges often provide highly amusing results (and plenty of bending the rules).

Team captains Sean and Jon are great and Jimmy Carr works as a likeable host with plenty of visual gags up his sleeves. The usual countdown team of Susie and Rachel play along with the comedians well and hold their own in their respective fields. A great all round comedy panel show that I never tire of watching!

Come Dine with Me

It's tea-time tv at its finest - watching 4-5 strangers host dinner parties for each other, trying to out-do each other and often trying not to kill each other in the process. The food, entertainment and people involved all range from the awful to the sublime and it's a treat to watch how the sparks fly or how friendships are made.

But Dave Lamb's narration is the real star of the show, he's sarcastic, sassy and on point 100% of the time, what a hero!

Very charming show about village life, country and town relationships and (in later seasons) the challenges of modern technology to all the residents. Through the eyes of mainly Laura and Dorcas, we see the gentleness of country/small town, 19th century life and the ups and downs of all the show's loveable residents.

The show's pace was sometimes a wee bit slow, but that is both the beauty and the curse of writing a gentle Sunday night historical drama. I was very pleased to see most characters get a well developed character arc, and a satisfying conclusion to their narratives. Overall an excellent drama that holds your attention for the characters, plot lines, cosutmes and super sets each week. You also learn a lot about the inner workings of a Victorian post office!

The Restoration Man

I love George Clarke, his passion for architecture and his giddy excitement to be involved in projects but this show doesn't quite live up to the heights of Grand Designs (which has an almost identical formula). Restoring often old and falling-to-bits barns isn't as exciting as seeing sleek new designs being built from the ground up. Still, I do end up watching the odd episode and enjoying it every now and then.

The IT Crowd

Very funny British sit-com with plenty of references for geeks, computer nerds and anyone who has ever felt awkward in the workplace. The phrase "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" never gets old and the fact that no one in the company is very IT proficient is addressed at every opportunity. Moss, Jen and Roy have a great friendship that you only get with work collegues and many of the reocurring gags they deliver between themselves are great too.

Although not every episode made me laugh out loud, and some of the plot lines were a bit hit or miss, overall the show delivered a good amount of comedy and originality in the writing. The episode based on Countdown is still a comdey highlight for me, I must have seen it half a dozen times at least! I admire the show for finishing when and in the way it did too, a great send off for all our favourite characters.

Nice to explore the landscapes, animals and humans who live in Arabia in such depth and in brilliantly filmed form. Really interesting to see how cultures have changed in more recent, modern history. The camel racing with robot jockeys was great watching!
