Started out very promising.
- Does not have that "cheap" feel most current Sci-Fi shows do.
- It does not employ a cast of tweens wearing leather and gothic make-up.
Downside is, like with most Sci-Fi aimed at adults it's more about the drama, meaning you will see no actual aliens (at least for now, hoping that will change).
All in all it's something to turn to if Magicians/Shadowhunters felt too immature, but you need to feed your inner Geek.
Absolutely brilliant. I wish my country would have one of these! A perfect mix of comedy and actual news you might otherwise never hear of, or at least not in an ulfiltered manner ;)
While I've been a fan of the original show, this just feels wrong. Even though we can look at this through the prism of being young back then, I still believe today's youth will not be able to appreciate the outdated references and concept of a sit-com where everyone enters via a magical door that goes straight into your living-room/kitchen. Even the "jabs" at today's teens with the abundance of electronic devices feel weak and somehow blunted. If I cannot enjoy it (and I have with the original show) I highly doubt anyone except for fans that have never grown up will. I just feel like the producers (much like Kimmy Gibbler) are stuck in the 80's. Imagine a remake of Star-Trek that featured paper models on strings instead of CGI, for that authentic 60's feel... would you enjoy that?
What you can expect:
- the worst acting experience, ever since you saw your little sister play a tree in that pre-school play
- props that look like something I made in a garage, out of tin-foil once when I was 7
- the general feeling that this was made by 3 guys in a van (every possible meaning applies)*
- this is loosely based on a fantasy book series aimed at teens
- there are no actors, but a lot of models
- going past the first episode makes the show 3D as you will start to taste vomit (do not do this at home)**
With the lack of anything fantasy-related comng out and Dresden Files never coming back I will take it, or at least I will not judge until I see a few more episodes, as the pilot left us with a cliffhanger that might sway things one way or the other for the whole series. So far I wouldn't say it's terrible, although I could ask for fewer "pretty teens". Kind of feels like "The 100" did back in S1, but that show got really 20-times better afterwards, so this might as well. Here's hoping for the best.
The only downside to this show is that it was cancelled. I still believe it's the best role Paul Blackthorne had, ever. I can't recommend to new viewers however since you will be left disappointed and might start sending angry letters to SyFy for a renewal :)
Going in I expected something close to Wynona Earp. I am happy to be wrong.
The show feels great, there are no awkward shots or effects that I've learned to associate with recent Sci-Fi / Western combinations. Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy is just brilliant. I am enjoying his character, and most of the others, very much. Like many others I had no information about the show prior to it, and my expectations were low (How many Breaking Bads can a network make?), but this show delivered so far. If nothing severely bad happens (like my friendly vampire dying) I am in for the long run.
The vibe you get from this is the comedy shows from the 70's-80's that would put "humor" right in your face. Now this might not sound like something that bad until it gets mixed up with awkwardness and the horrible script. Not only does this show fail to be entertaining, but after finishing a single episode I felt like I needed a shower.
Best way I could sum this up is: each season the writers of the show build a nice house out of human interaction, hopes and emotions and then come down on it with a hammer, really hard. It's fun to watch and since it deals with uninhibited people each finds their own favorite (hell, I've known people who associate themselves with Frank...).
Certainly the best Sci-Fi series to date.
The Special Effects hold their own even now and the story is not only unique for it's time but also has many aspects to it not found in later productions for the genre.
It's cast is also the sole reason why I even bothered with later seasons of the original Stargate series.
Must watch.
